Background: Human Creatine phosphokinase (CK)CPK, creatine kinase isoenzymes are performed when the total human CK,CPK level is elevated. Human creatine kinase CK(CPK)Isoenzyme testing can help differentiate the source of the damaged tissue. Human (CPK)CK creatine kinase enzyme consists of two subunits, which can be either B (brain type) or M (muscle type). Three different isoenzymes: Human (CKMM)CK-MM, Human (CKBB)CK-BB isoenzyme and Human (CKMB)CK-MB isoenzyme exist.
Human (CKBB)CK-BB CKBB isoenyzme occurs mainly in brain and lung tissues. Skeletal muscle expresses Human (CKMM)CK-MM isoenzyme(98%) and human (CKMB)CK-MB isoenzyme at low levels (1%) in muscle. The myocardium (heart muscle), in contrast, expresses human (CKMM)CK-MM isoenzyme at 70% and human (CKMB)CK-MB isoenzyme at 30%.
