D-dimer Antigen now Available to Researchers from Lee Biosolutions
Published: Apr 3rd, 2007
April 3, 2007; ST. LOUIS – Lee Biosolutions has announced the production and availability of human D-dimer, an antigen widely used as a marker for several vein and artery related medical conditions. Its presence is used to identify the incidence of blood clots in arteries and veins.
D-dimer is an end product that is created by plasmin-mediated degradation of crosslinked fibrin clots. The measurement of D-dimer has proven to be a sensitive marker for the evaluation of disseminated intravascular coagulation. D-dimer can also effectively rule out patients with a low or a moderate probability of venous thromboembolism, including deep vein thrombosis or pulmonary embolism.
According to Lee Biosolutions President Burton Lee, blood clots are responsible for hundreds of thousands of death each year that may otherwise be prevented if the clot were identified and diagnosed sooner.
“Pulmonary embolism alone is estimated to be responsible for as many as 200,000 deaths each year, and research by the American College of Chest Physicians suggests that it may be the most easily preventable cause of hospital death ,” Lee said. “The lab studies that continue to be conducted with D-dimer are among the keys to lowering that number.”
While D-dimer is able to indicate the presence of a significant clot, it is unable to indicate the location of the clot within the body. The D-dimer test is most useful when it yields a negative result and is able to rule out clotting. The D-dimer test is often administered with additional tests in the process of diagnosing a disease or condition.
