Human Lactoferrin Research:
Human Lactoferrin (hLF) is an iron-binding glycoprotein that facilitates the production of hydroxyl radicals and chelates iron, preventing its accessibility to microorganisms and thus inhibiting growth. Human Lactoferrin is found in secondary granules in polymorphonuclear neutrophils .Human Lactoferrin from human nuetrophil(s) lacks terminal fucose residues in the glycan chains that are required for binding to macrophages.
Human Lactoferrin plays an important role in iron transport and utilization in humans.A glycoprotein containing about 6% sugar and having a total molecular weight of about 77kDa, human lactoferrin is capable of binding two ferric ions with high affinity. Although lactoferrin binds iron tightly, the binding is reversible so that the metal is available upon demand to cells with a need for this essential element. Each human lactoferrin molecule has two iron-binding domains.
Human Lactoferrin article:"Correlation of Lactoferrin with Neutrophilic Inflamation in Body Fluids".Human Lactoferrin REF: Clinical and Diagnostic Laboratory Immunology, Nov. 1995 /lactoferrin/human
Human Lactoferrin(hLF,LTF) appears to activate host defense systems in part by stimulating the release of interleukin-8,a neutrophil activator.
Human Lactoferrin study: Human lactoferrin (hLF) is found in most body fluids. Human Lactoferrin (hLF) in blood is secreted from neutrophils, and Human Lactoferrin (hLF,LF) concentration is related to the total neutrophil pool and the rate of turnover. The extracellular concentration of Human Lactoferrin (hLF,LTF)is used as an index of neutrophil activation, especially in samples containing anti-myeloperoxidase antibodies.Human Lactoferrin ref: Autiero,J.Androl.12:191-200, 1991/lactoferrin/human
Human lactoferrin research: Human lactoferrin is an iron-binding protein with a bilobal structure. Each lobe of human lactoferrin contains a high affinity binding site for a single Fe3+ ion and an associated CO32- ion. Although iron binds very tightly, it can be released at low pH, with an accompanying conformational change in which the two domains move apart.
