Human Pepsinogen(s) PGI(PGA) and Human Pepsinogen PGII(PGC) are aspartic proteases produced in the gastric mucosa and secreted into the gastric lumen that play a major role in the digestion of proteins after activation of acidic pH. Human Pepsinogen is synthesized as isoymogens and are classified into two groups, Pepsinogen I, PGI(PGA) and Pepsinogen II, PGII(PGC). Human Pepsinogen Reference: Annals of Surgical Oncology, 7(7):508-514 2000/pepsinogen/human/gastric.

Human Pepsinogen I (PGA) and Human Pepsinogen II (PGC) antigen have been investigated as a possible biomarker for early detection of ,Gastric cancer (GC) ,adenoma (GA) and severe atrophic (diffuse or patchy) corpus gastritis.

Human Serum pepsinogen I (PG I) and pepsinogen II (PG II) levels are known to increase in the presence of H. pylori-related nonatrophic chronic gastritis. The measurement of human serum Pepsinogen provides much information on the presence of intestinal metaplasia as well as atrophic gastritis. The eradication of H. pylori provokes a significant change in human serum Pepsinogen PG values: it reduces both human Pepsinogen PG I and human Pepsinogen PG II and elevates the human pepsinogen PG I(PGA) to human pepsinogen PG II(PGC) ratio.
