C-Reactive Protein (CRP) is a pentameric serum protein belonging to the pentraxin family that is comprised of five identical ~ 23kDa subunits. It is a positive acute phase reactant, the levels of which increase modestly in humans in response to inflammation, tissue injury or disease. CRP is purified using multiple affinity chromotagraphy steps.

Human C-Reactive protein is a member of the class of acute phase reactants as its levels rise dramatically during inflammatory processes occurring in the body. Human C-reactive Protein (CRP) is thought to assist in complement binding to foreign and damaged cells and affect the humoral response to disease.

Human C-Reactive Protein (CRP) is also believed to play an important role in innate immunity, as an early defense system against infections.

The American Heart Association and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention published a joint scientific statement in 2003 on the use of inflammatory markers in clinical and public health practice
