HUMAN MYOGLOBIN:
Human Myoglobin is a single-chain globular protein of 153 amino acids. Myoglobin contains a heme (iron-containing porphyrin) prosthetic group in the center around which the remaining apoprotein folds. Human Myoglobin has a molecular weight of 16,700 daltons. Human Myoglobin is found in skeletal and cardiac muscle cells and is capable of reversibly binding molecular oxygen and enhancing the rate of oxygen diffusion through the muscle cell. Human Myoglobin is an oxygen carrier in the cytoplasm and appears to be responsible for the transport of oxygen from the cell membrane to the mitochondrion.
Human cardiac Myoglobin (Mb) is a Haem containing protein and implicated as a cause of acute renal failure following damage to muscle tissue (e.g. rhabdomyolysis, severe crush trauma, malignant hyperthermia, status epilepticus and neuroleptic malignant syndrome), due to its toxicity to renal tubular epithelium. Human Myoglobin also serves as a useful biomarker for the detection of successful reperfusion following thrombolytic therapy.

Human Myoglobin Research: Human Myoglobin(Mb) shares limitations to biomarkers such as Human Troponin and Human CK due to high concentrations in skeletal muscle, Human Myoglobin(s) small molecular size and consequent rapid rise in the setting of myocardial necrosis. Human Myoglobin REF: The National Academy of Clinical Biochemistry indicates Human Myoglobin(Mb) has retained a value of a very early marker of MI (Myocaridal Infarction).

Human myoglobin Clinical studies have shown that the combined use of myoglobin and a more specific marker of myocardial necrosis (cardiac troponin or isoenzyme CK-MB) may be useful for early exluclusion of MI.
